BUILDINGS by SHAUN KARDINAL

New to the Lower East Side art scene, boutique/gallery CLARABELLA is pleased to present BUILDINGS, the inaugural New York City exhibit from Seattle based photographer, Shaun Kardinal. Photographing rooftops has been a hobby of the artist's for many years. Though an avid digital artist in his teens, it was not until his twenty-third year with an antique medium-format camera in hand that Kardinal developed an absolute passion for the subject. It was the way the buildings looked as he gazed through the viewfinder, playing with the vibrancy of Seattle's sunsets, the richness of her summers, the austere dullness of her grey winters. It was a love affair with a new city encouraging familiarity, ushering these monoliths in as kin, good friends, integral parts of Kardinal's daily walks to and from work. In this way, his photographs are meant to be seen as intimate portraits.

These buildings, at once solitary and full of life, seem to play with and against each other: three skyscrapers playfully fall against one another; an isolated wall dares to stand alone; a telephone pole bisects a brick building, while sagging lines tease its rooftop; four more in four corners, never to embrace; another still, reflects on the day as the sun plays its final notes on a bright pink sky.

Fashion Week Daily reports:
"Art patrons and fashion-lovers of the Canadian persuasion will get an eyeful at Vancouver Art Gallery’s Monet to Dalí Ball on June 8, where Chanel's Fall/Winter 2007 ready-to-wear collection will make its North American debut with a formal runway presentation. Aside from Karl Lagerfeld's creations, also on preview is the exhibition Monet to Dalí: Modern Masters, from the Cleveland Museum of Art, which features art from many of the greats, including Cézanne, Dalí, Degas, Gauguin, Manet, Matisse, Modigliani, Monet, Picasso, Renoir, Seurat and van Gogh. The black tie fundraising event will begin with a champagne reception in a Monet-inspired garden on Robson Square Plaza, followed by dinner and a live auction at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver’s grand BC Ballroom, which will be transformed by the French fashion house to replicate the snowbound scenery from its recent show at the Grand Palais in Paris."

Now all those Vancouverites that I know (and you know who you are) get thee to the ball!

La Vie en Rose....What an Amazing Film!

Amongst other events last night, I attended a special showing (thank you lovely Jennifer Levy Niederhoffer of Impress Media) of La Vie en Rose, a soon to be released film. It was absolutely wonderful. I love Edith Paif's voice, her songs are usually the soundtrack to my Sunday morning brunch-making at home. Despite my love for her voice though, I knew very little of her life. What a poignant and amazingly produced film this was, really touching on the human character....

A synopsis:
"The ferocious talent and indomitable spirit of legendary chanteuse Edith Piaf is celebrated in this French feast of a biopic, featuring a stunning performance by Marion Cotillard as the "little sparrow" who lived, loved and sang with no regrets. A huge hit in France and winner of five Césars, La Vie en Rose arrives on these shores with its uniquely Gallic blend of onstage triumph, backstage tragedy and tempestuous melodrama intact. Skillfully sifting time periods, far-flung locales and extremes of mood and imagery, director Olivier Dahan delivers far more than the standard biopic. Jumping with emotional, if not sequential, logic among pivotal periods in Piaf's life—from her Balzacian childhood as the daughter of a circus acrobat and alcoholic prostitute, her upbringing in a brothel and her discovery by nightclub owner Louis Leplée (Gérard Depardieu) to her passionate affair with boxer Marcel Cedan, years of drug addiction and a hallucinatory final night in Grasse—the film indulges its heroine’s unquenchable thirst for life, love and experience"

Joy, who used to work as Director of Design for Marc Jacobs Handbag and Accessorises division, is the fantabulous creator behind Gryson bags, they are newish on the scene, but not shabby at all, beautifully constructed from high quality leather and suede made in Italy. Invasion of the Brits...MET Costume Institute Gala

Gosh, so much to talk about. Last nights MET Costume Institute Gala....and the dresses!!! And then coming up tomorrow, Kate Moss at Barney's. OMG, it's too much. Starting today there is an ongoing witty commentary by Simon Doonan on the Barneys website. An excerpt below:

"Is she here yet? Is she bringing Pete? Is she going to clamber into the window like she did at the UK launch?...Can I come to the Party and bring my extended family? Oy Veh!!!!!

I have been at Barneys for twenty years and nothing-no store event or opening-has rivaled the insane, frenzied, build-up to the arrival of Kate and her Topshop line. I would put it right up there with the Invasion of the Faukland Islands, and the first episode of AbFab, or at least the launch of the DVD of Abfab."

Geez people, have we forgotten about the other huge, major Brit on the scene, hello: The Queen!!!

Right but anyway, yes back to important things like Topshop. Argh, I can't believe I am actually willingly going to subject myself to the madness that will be tomorrow.
